Draft of new ESC Standing Rules - invitation for comment and feedback
The ESC Standing Rules have been updated to align with Canada’s Not-for-profit Corporations Act and to comply with our new By-laws. The updated Standing Rules will be presented to ESC members at the AGM in Saskatoon on September 30, 2014 for approval. A draft of the updated Standing Rules is posted here, and we invite all ESC members to review the proposed document prior to the vote on September 30. We also encourage any questions, comments or feedback you may have regarding this document to be sent to the ESC Secretary.
Changes to ESC Election Procedures
After transitioning to the new Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act, some changes were needed to the Society’s election procedures.
The Act requires (1) that Directors be elected at the Annual Members’ Meeting, rather than through the postal or on-line election that has been conducted in the past, and (2) that Societal Officers also be Directors in order to have a vote at Board meetings. Following the new By-laws approved by ESC members, we will therefore still hold a ballot to select candidates prior to the Annual Meeting, but the names of the selected individuals will then be presented for formal election at the Annual Meeting in Saskatoon in September. This ballot will select candidates for a Director at Large and a Societal Director; the Societal Director will then be appointed as Second Vice-President by the Board, and will succeed to the positions of First Vice-President, President and Past-President in the following years.
CANADA NON-PROFIT CORPORATIONS ACT
At the Annual General Meeting on October 22, 2013, the membership of the Society voted to approve new Articles and By-Laws as part of the required transition to the Canada Non-profit Corporations Act. The Society’s application to be continued as a Corporation under the Act has now been approved by Corporations Canada, and we have received our Certificate of Continuance, effective October 30, 2013. The transition is thus legally complete, and we are now operating under the new By-laws. These have been posted in the Member’s Section. Over the coming months we will also be updating the Standing Rules and Committee Guidelines to ensure that they are compatible with our new By-laws and the Act.

2016 ESC Annual Meeting and International Congress of Entomology
We are pleased to announce that we will be co-locating our 2016 annual meeting with the International Congress of Entomology (ICE) hosted by the Entomological Society of America (ESA) in Orlando, Florida (see http://ice2016orlando.org/)! The ESC Governing Board has voted to accept the ESA's invitation to join them and other national entomological societies at the ICE 2016 venue.

We also are pleased to introduce Murray Isman (UBC) as our appointed representative to the ICE Organizing Committee. Murray is already poised to collaborate with the ESA in ensuring a smooth merger of meetings. Of the options presented to us by the ESA in their invitation, we have opted for a separate, pre-ICE conduct of our Society's business, and then full access to what will be a diverse and rich ICE scientific program under the theme of Entomology without Borders.

So mark your calendars for September 23- 30, 2016, and look forward to more announcements as we move closer to the big event.
